What renters insurance covers
- Personal property — furniture, clothing, electronics and other belongings damaged or stolen in a covered event.
- Personal liability — if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property.
- Loss of use — extra costs such as a hotel if a covered loss forces you to move out temporarily.
- Medical payments — minor medical bills for guests injured in your home.
Choosing your coverage
Start with a rough inventory of what you own and what it would cost to replace. Ask whether a policy pays replacement cost or actual cash value — replacement cost pays to buy new items, while actual cash value subtracts depreciation.
Valuable items like jewelry, collectibles or high-end electronics may have limits, so ask about scheduling them separately. Flood damage is typically excluded.
Save by bundling
Renters insurance is often inexpensive, and adding it to your auto policy with the same carrier can qualify you for a multi-policy discount.
This guide is general information, not a policy. Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by carrier and state — your policy documents are what apply. Ask us about your specific situation.
