How umbrella insurance works
If you’re found responsible for a serious accident or injury, the damages can exceed the liability limits on your auto or homeowners policy. Once those limits are used up, your umbrella policy pays the rest, up to its own limit. Umbrella policies commonly start at $1 million of coverage.
Most carriers require you to carry certain minimum liability limits on your underlying auto and home policies before they’ll write an umbrella.
Who should consider it
- Homeowners, especially with a pool, trampoline or dog
- Families with teen drivers
- Landlords and rental property owners
- Anyone with significant savings, investments or future earnings to protect
- Business owners (ask about a commercial umbrella)
This guide is general information, not a policy. Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by carrier and state — your policy documents are what apply. Ask us about your specific situation.
